Israeli Minister claims that President Assad has almost won the battle for Syria, and has asked for more US involvement to battle Iran’s growing influence in the Middle East.
Defence Minister of the State of Israel, Avigdor Lieberman, said on Tuesday that Bashar al-Assad has been “successful” in Syria’s 5-year long war, and was presently on the brink of defeating his adversaries.
“Assad has emerged victorious in the battle,” Lieberman told Hebrew media news website, Walla!.
“Suddenly, everyone wants to get closer to Assad,” he said.
“I see that there is now a long line of countries applauding and wooing Assad, including Western (and) moderate Sunni Muslim (states).”
Assad’s fortunes have changed drastically since Russia propelled a military support campaign for Assad back in 2015, and he now seems well on top after a progression of key triumphs.
Israel has already approached Assad to negotiate a future plan of action, however; authorities have tried to abstain from getting too intensely engaged with the Syrian Government.
Israel has blamed Assad’s benefactor, Iran, for exporting modern weapons to Lebanon’s Hezbollah, and has taken military action against these weapons suppliers of tthe Shiite contingent.
Israel and Syria have, in fact, been in a condition of war ever since the establishment of the State of Israel, back in 1948, and the Jewish state has been concerned over the developing Iranian impact in Damascus.
Lieberman said Israel were seeking an expanded American contribution to offset the Iranian risk.
“We hope that the United States will be more active on the Syrian front and in the Middle East in general. We are on the northern front against the Russians, Iranians, Turks, and Hezbollah,” he said.
Israeli Head of State, Benjamin Netanyahu, conceded a year ago that Israel had initiated many assaults on weapons escorts bound for Hezbollah.
