The Foreign Minister of Germany has claimed that the global order lead by American dominance is over, and that US leadership on the world stage is fading under the Trump Administration.
While addressing a foreign policy forum in Berlin on Tuesday, the German Foreign Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, said: “the global dominance of the United States is slowly becoming history.” Gabriel also stated that the “withdrawal of the United States under Donald Trump from its reliable role as a guarantor of western-led multilateralism accelerates a change of the world order with immediate consequences for German and European interests.”
“Germany can no longer simply react to US policy but must establish its own position… even after Trump leaves the White House, relations with the US will never be the same,” Gabriel added.
Gabriel additionally accused the US of not seeing the world as a global community anymore, and criticized them for their increasingly isolationist attitude. He also added that Europe needs to stand up to the US’ policies, particularly those that are against European interests, in order to make sure Europe competes on the global stage.
