The Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Erdoğan, has claimed that Turkish-backed rebel forces have entered the Kurdish-held enclave of Afrin, accompanied by Turkish Airforce bombing runs, Turkish state media reported.
“TSK (Turkish Armed Forces) has started airborne operations,”
“As of this moment, our brave Armed Forces have started the aerial offensive to eliminate the PYD and PKK and [Islamic State] elements in Afrin,” Prime Minister Yildirim said at a party congress on Saturday.
According to a Turkish newspaper, Sol, Turkey has started “Operation Olive Branch” against the Kurdish rebels in Afrin.
The Syrian Democratic Force has meanwhile stated that Turkey has performed cross-border shelling in the region to use it as a pretext for the attack, claiming that they will defend themselves if they have to.
