The United Kingdom’s Defence Secretary has claimed that Russia could cause “thousands and thousands” of deaths through cyber attacks.
Speaking on Saturday, Gavin Williamson said:
“What they [Russia] are looking at doing is they are going to be thinking ‘How can we just cause so much pain to Britain? Damage its economy, rip its infrastructure apart, actually cause thousands and thousands and thousands of deaths, but actually have an element of creating total chaos within the country.”
Earlier in the week, Williamson warned against a cut in the defense spending by Theresa May’s government, claiming that Moscow could look to benefit from a weaker British armed forces.
Williamson claimed that the Russian Government has been gathering information on the Power Stations inside the UK, and may look to use cyber warfare to attack the country’s energy supply.
“The plan for the Russians won’t be for landing crafts to appear in the South Bay in Scarborough and of Brighton Beach… they are going to be thinking, ‘How can we just cause so much pain to Britain?”
He also warned that Russia could look to compromise Britain’s “international connectors“, which are believed to be providing electricity to 8 million homes at the moment.
The Chief Executive of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre recently warned that the alleged recent attacks by the Russians have targeted the UK’s power supply.
