A day after admitting to lying about meeting with the Russian President, Dutch Foreign Minister Halbe Zijlstra resigned has resigned.
Zijlstra earlier alleged that during a conference in 2006, Putin had expressed his ambitions to create a “Greater Russia“.
The Foreign Minister admitted that the reason for his resignation was due to his credibility having dropped exponentially following major news coverage of the event.
His resignation came during a speech he gave to the Dutch House of Representatives this Tuesday, where he admitted that lying about the Putin meeting was the biggest mistake of his political career.
The scandal has prematurely ended his term in office after he was sworn in last October following the election victory of Rutte’s party.
