An attack on churchgoers in Dagestan by a gunman has left five people dead and many others injured. The police reports confirm that the shooter was killed in a standoff after the incident.
An armed assailant used a hunting rifle to open fire on a group of worshippers leaving the church.
The worshippers had been attending a ceremony dedicated to the end of the Russian folk festival of Maslenitsa.
Talking to the Russian state media outlet, RT, after the attack, a witness said this:
“There were a lot of people there, moms with little children, elderly people. I believe God saved us, not allowing the man to get inside the church,”
Russia’s Health Ministry said five people were wounded in the shooting before being hospitalized; the Interior Ministry then subsequently confirmed that two of those injured were police officers who responded to the shooting.
