According to the White House, the Vice President of the USA, Mike Pence, was set to meet a team of North Korean officials including the sister of Kim Jong Un during his visit to Pyeongchang for the Winter Olympics, however; the meeting was canceled by the North Koreans before further progress could be made.
The cancellation of the meeting was, according to Mike Pence’s office on Tuesday, a sign that US pressure on the North Korean regime was working effectively
The meeting was first reported on by the Washington Post.
“North Korea dangled a meeting in hopes of the vice president softening his message, which would have ceded the world stage for their propaganda during the Olympics,” said Pence’s chief of staff, Nick Ayers.
The president signed off on the meeting, allowing Pence to meet with the officials, but only on the condition that the US not back down from its demands on Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear program.
