A German village has voted to keep a Swastika-embossed church bell as a memorial. The church bell is also cast with the words “All for the Fatherland – Adolf Hitler“.
The reasoning given by the Herxheim Parish Council was that the bell stood as a reminder of the nation’s past. The parish council voted 10-3 on Monday to reject the offer of replacing it with another bell from the Protestant Church of St James.
Members of the local parish council told news reporters that the Nazi-era relic, which has hung there since 1934, should stay.
The council said that the bell stood as “an impetus for reconciliation and a memorial against violence and injustice“.
