Pro-Union Spanish Rallies Held Across Country

After the Referendum in Catalonia this Sunday saw the majority of the voting public largely in favor of secession, many rallies calling for Spanish unity have been held across the country, including the nation’s capital, Madrid.

The rallies disputed the election results, and called for greater unity between the Spanish autonomous communities, particularly for warmer ties between Catalonia and Madrid.

The protesters in Madrid requested more dialogue between the communities, particularly in the lead up to any future major decisions, and pushed for unity amongst the Spanish people. The protesters were dressed in white, and held banners and placards with slogans such as “Spain is better than its leaders” and “let’s talk”.

There were other demonstrations that carried a similar message in cities including Valencia, Seville, Malaga, and even the Catalonian capital of Barcelona.

Spanish businesses continue to embargo commerce in the Catalan region, as political uncertainty on the outcome of the referendum grows. The Brazilian Caixa Foundation, which controls one of the Spain’s largest banks, announced it was moving its headquarters to Palma de Mallorca while the crisis continues.
