Obesity Reaches Record Highs in American Adults

The obesity epidemic appears be worsening in the United States. According to recent statistics, 40% of the adults, and 19% of the youth in the US are obese. For adults, this is the highest rate the country has ever seen. These results are according to data released last Friday by the National Center for Health Statistics.

This epidemic gained pace in the early 2000’s, and has only been growing since. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the problem began in 1999, and has shown no sign of slowing down, only growing worse as time goes on; this is particularly the case among adults.

However, youth stability rates have become steadier in the recent years; though it is worth noting that, at least according to Dr. Craig Hales, we may not have a solid consensus on the pattern of youth obesity without another 4 years of data to analyze.

The research data released shows that there has been a 30% increase in adult obesity, and a 33% increase in youth obesity from 1999-2000 to 2015-16, despite FDA and Federal efforts to control these issues.
